Success Stories
We lacked personal discipline Facing the facts meant getting the balance right for my team and me. Sure, we were all working hard and we had a business plan - but we lacked personal discipline and focus.
We had limiting paradigms which needed exposing. It was painful sometimes, but highly effective. When we understood each other's goals and challenges, things that were perceived as immovable just moved. My team who were good, became extraordinary.
Best Year Yet is not complicated. All the program asks of you is to do it and keep doing it! The results from my team speak for themselves - we moved from last place in the country to first in the highly challenging environment of sales and service. Best Year Yet played a big part and will do again as I take on a new and much bigger team this year.

We needed to narrow our focus
When I started the Best Year Yet process a year ago, I wanted to nurture a better sense of team at the National Runaway Switchboard (NRS). We embarked on a process that was both exciting and a bit scary -- for us to come together as a leadership team and create our top ten goals and initiatives for the next 12 months.
We were ecstatic with our results. We have achieved 91% of the goals we set out to accomplish, and we did it in a way that brought the team closer together with more direct and candid communication. We became more focused on results -- results that required working together as a team to get the quality we strive for. I can say embarking upon the Best Year Yet program was one of the most important things to ever happen to NRS.

Half our board was leaving!
We have used the Best Year Yet system for the past year and it has totally streamlined our Board Meetings. We have more meaningful conversations and we stay focused on the important matters, leaving some of the day-to-day issues to the administration.
In the past 12 months, our membership has grown over 40%, and all of our programs have achieved an outstanding/excellent rating by our members.
We chose to use Best Year Yet for the second year because we want to continue to build on the momentum we have generated in the past year, and with half our Board turning over, we feel it makes for an incredibly smooth transition process. We look forward to our new year and having our best year yet. . . again.

Does it take adversity to make teams strong?
We were setting out on such an audacious expedition that I knew it would take a tightly run ship to make it work. We needed a focus and plan or we'd never make it. Most teams think they'll get stronger in the face of adversity, but I didn't want to draw us together through desperation.
I believe that climbers are too apt to just get out there and do things. True courage and achievement takes organization, knowing what you want and going for it. Best Year Yet helped us do exactly that. The results we achieved were truly incredible.

Our communication was superficial
We realized that we were not communicating often enough with each other to really build our business. Our communication was somewhat superficial since we all knew we had big issues ahead of us but no one knew how to bring them up. Even better was the fact that our regular follow up sessions held us accountable and kept us talking about what each of us could do to keep our dream alive. We had to make some difficult decisions mid-year regarding our finances and we did it.
At the end of the year, we had achieved an overall score of 83% on our annual goals. Marketing was our major focus. We knew we needed more sales to get over the hump. We achieved 200% of our goal to add 6 new wholesale customers. Our cake sales went from $25-$50 per month to over $600 per month one year later.
We are now entering wedding cake season. We will be busy, hot, and tired. But we will not be too busy to set our Best Year Yet goals for the next year.

We were going through a significant transition
We've just completed our third Best Year Yet. It's the best staff integration and plan implementation process I've experienced in thirty years of management.
Martha Boettcher has helped me, as a leader, to discover things for myself. She has a piecing perception of where each person is at and an intriguing way of helping them work together.
During a time of significant transition, our staff unity increased, allowing us to work more collaboratively. With Best Year Yet, things run more simply, we're more effective, and we enjoy ministry more.
